Hall Tree assembly part 1

I started assembly on the Hall Tree last night.  I ran into some unexpected problems so I didnt get as much done as I had hoped to.
I started with the rear backsplash for the shelf at the top.  This one went pretty well.  I used my
Rockler Clampit and it did a good job.
This is the bottom with the apron in the front.  Since the pocket holes are on the inside I put the Clampit on the outside.  In hindsight I should have put the clamps all the choice to the inside of the Clampit.  I had put them further out to allow me to get the drill to the pocket hole but I think putting the clamps all the choice inside would have worked better.  The wood ended up drifting and one of the screws split the edge of the front corner.
I forced some glue into the split and clamped it and you can barely tell now.  I just need to do some sanding and after I paint it you will never know.
I got the top shelf mounted, glued and screwed in and I was very happy with the result.
Only the top shelf, backsplash, and bottom front apron are actually attached.  I dry fit the rest to see how it looks.  I hope to get the rest of it assembled tonight.

Thats Not A Petite Workbench This Is A Petite Workbench

With the coming of his newborn son, I for one suspect that Marcs Split Top Roubo bench build will fall behind schedule. I cant think of a better reason to delay a project. Along with the entire Woodworking Community Id like to wish Marc & Nicole the very best with their little bundle of joy.With the delay of the Split Top Roubo in mind, I set about building a smaller bench that Marc could use with his son. I ended up making two.

The first is a Split Top Roubo, much as Marc plans to build. Only I made my petiter than Chris Schwarzs Petite Roubo.
If these benches dont do it for you, then join in with the Guild for the actual workbench build. Given that Marc has a newborn at home, I might actually keep up with him this time.

MWA Review 1 Rough Cut Woodworking with Tommy Mac

A few months ago the founding administrators of the Modern Woodworkers Association were given the opportunity to review the new Rough Cut book from Taunton. It’s a companion to the first season of the TV show entitled “Rough Cut - Woodworking with Tommy Mac”.
The book dedicates a chapter to each of the season one projects with an additional chapter on finishing. It does a good job of walking readers through the projects and with a basic understanding of woodworking and the corresponding episode as a supplement most of the projects should be easily achievable.For our full review, please listen as four woodworkers banter on and on about actually having read a book.We’re working on setting it up in iTunes and we’ll update this as soon as we do. Finally 1 Day Passes to Fine Woodworking Live

Last year I would have saved a lot of money if theyd offered 1-day passes to Fine Woodworking Live. It conflicted with my family vacation, and after paying for the whole weekend I had to go home on Friday night.
Im a die hard woodworking conference fanatic, so I knew what I was getting into when I bought the full pass. Still, I would have appreciated saving the $175.00 by only buying a 1-day pass.
Thankfully theyve just announced that 1-day passes are available for Fine Woodworking Live 2013. If youve been holding out because you cant make for the whole event and dont want to pay for the whole event, nows the time to book. Even if you just come for one day youll have a great time learning and hanging out with your woodworking friends (if your one day is Saturday, youll even see me).
Hopefully thell let idiots into the conference in 2013 too.

3 Years On Ive Still Not Found The Ultimate Woodshop

It was three years ago today that I published my first post here, at the Penultimate Woodshop. It was a fairly routine first post. I introduced myself and thanked the online woodworking community.
As I reflect on it, Im now more thankful to the online community than ever. Im thankful for the help, instruction and friendship that Ive received from the community. While woodworking is often a solo activity, I know that sharing it with a community of fellow woodworkers enriches the experience beyond measure.
So please keep woodworking, keep participating and keep sharing. Thank you for reading (you can keep doing that too).

Two Years On And Ive Still Not Achieved the Ultimate Woodshop

Holy crap! It dawned on me this morning that I started the Penultimate Woodshop mid-summer two years ago. I just checked the blog archive, and my fist post was two years ago, yesterday.
Ye olde original cone monster (hes real).
Its been a great two years and Im striving to keep the posts coming semi-regularly and working to build the online community even more by contributing to the Modern Woodworkers Association.
Id like to thank everyone for reading and joining me on this delightful online woodworking journey. Ive made many good friends and had many opportunities I wouldnt otherwise have had. Thank you all.

For nostalgia, heres a link to my first post. I wouldnt write it this choice today, but it was appropriate for the time it was written. Its Wanderful Part 1 Where to Begin


About 3 months ago my Sister-in-Law asked me to make her a wand to take to the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. It’s not that she often requests things (though she does have a bookcase I built), it’s that she’s A) a harry potter fan and B) a follower of mine on Google Buzz.

You see, in November of 2010, my friend, Kenneth Woodruff, wrote a blog post about the fantastic Harry Potter wand he made for Halloween that year. As I was truly impressed, I of course shared it on Buzz. I happened to be visiting my Sister-in-Law at the time, and as soon as I shared it “that’s a cool wand” could be heard from her corner of the living room.
Fast forward to May of 2011 and as the movie date approaches I get asked to make wands, wands for my Wife, Sister-in-Law and her partner. Wands like Kenneth made.Had Kenneth made a tool cabinet or a vacuum boom arm, I would have jumped right into the project. However, as Kenneth’s wand was faithful to the original (in that it is round and has carvings), it was a project well outside of my woodworking comfort zone. I’ve never worked in the round or carved before. As neither round work nor carving have held any appeal for me, I’ve never even read up on them (as I have with many other woodworking methods that I am interested in but have yet to try).

My first reaction was to stall. I didn’t really think about the project for 2 or 3 weeks. When I finally did begin planning, I went right to the source and contacted Kenneth about the wands. He was nice enough to provide some details on how he made his wand and some more detailed photos. The instructions still left this carving virgin wondering how I was going to make the wands. The photos though, were a fantastic help and a full 8.5” x 11” print out on photo paper served as my plan for making my wands. Following Kenneth’s advice, I then contacted the best and most enthusiastic carver I know, Kari Hultman. Unfortunately, my total carving naiveté was a deficit that even Kari’s detailed email instructions could not overcome.

Frustrated, I then turned to my Dad, a rather proficient carver in his own right, for advice. He pointed me towards his vast collection of carving tools and said have at it. Unfortunately, as sharpening is a task I’m only slightly better at then carving (and his curved carving tools looked awfully hard to sharpen), I turned down his offer to lend me his carving gouges and I decided to make the wands from my own tools that I knew how to use.

Meet the Modern Woodworkers Association at Woodworking in America

I usually limit most of my Online Woodworking Community discussion to the Modern Woodworkers Association site, podcast and organization I help run.
Today Im sharing some MWA news here also, because the news is big. Popular Woodworking Magazine has been kind enough to enter into a marketing agreement with the Modern Woodworkers Assocaition. Shop Renovation Phase 1 Video 2

As the shop renovation continues and the childrens spring activities ramp up, its been hard to find time to sit down at the computer and answer proper email, let alone write an actual blog entry. Luckily, Ive discovered that the built in video editing software in Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) makes putting together a simple video like this pretty easy.
Here I am, describing the process of adding the jam extensions to the miter saw wall recess. This entire video was shot, edited and shared in the shop (on my phone).
