How to make a planter box out of cedar fence pickets

My wife asked me to make a planter box for our front porch.  I showed her the Ice Chest/Cooler box and said imagine this wider and shallower.  She like the basic idea but wanted it lower to the ground and shallower.  I redesigned the box to fit her wishes and came up with the planter below.  I used 6 - 1 x 6 x 72 cedar fence pickets to make this planter.
I started out by setting up a stop block on my miter saw at 16".
I cut the bottoms off of all 6 pickets to use as legs.  This leaves me with six 56" boards.
I then cut three of these at 39".  These will be used for the sides.  I ripped one board into two 2 1/2" strips.  Each side will have one 5 1/2" board and one 2 1/2" board.
I reset the stop block at 13".  I got three pieces from the leftover after cutting the 39" pieces and then got eight more from two more pickets with the bottom cut off.  This leaves me with one more picket at a length of 56".
This gave me 11 boards to work with.  I will be using 3 for the ends and 8 for the bottom.
I set my table saw at 2 1/2" to rip the legs and the boards for the sides and end.
I ripped four legs at 2 1/2" and one of the 39" sides into two 2 1/2" wide boards and one of the 13" ends into two 2 1/2" wide boards.  I made sure to keep the two pieces of each leg together to make matching legs.
I took the two remaining legs and ripped them to 3" wide to be used in the center.
I left the stop block set at 13" and adjusted my miter saw to 45 degrees and cut both sides of the center legs.
Here are all the pieces cut except for the top frame.
Make sure to make 2 left legs and 2 right legs.
I built the legs using glue, a nail gun, and clamps.
I let the legs sit for 2 hours while the glue set.
Once the legs were dry I put a slight chamfer on all the exposed edges to soften the look and minimize splinters.  I also chamfered the pieces to go on the bottom to help with drainage.
Here are all the pieces chamfered, sanded to 120 grit, and ready for assembly.
I started with the short ends so that the bottom pieces will be the right length to stretch across.  I also setup the legs so that the joint will be facing the short side.  When you look at the long side of the planter you will only see the full 3" side.
I glued and screwed the 13" boards to the top section of the legs.  I put the 5 1/2" section on the bottom.  The floor pieces will be screwed into this so I wanted them attached to a board with more screws in the legs.  I couldnt find any coated deck screws in a 1" length so I had to use drywall screws.
I then took the two sides and glued and screwed in the 39" boards.
I marked the center of the side and the center of the middle leg.
I applied some glue and then clamped it in place.
I then set the planter on its side and pre drilled & counter sunk the holes.
I then screwed the legs to the side..   
All assembled and ready for stain.
I went with a light cherry stain.
I took the last remaining 56" piece of picket and cut it into one 14" length and one 41" length.  I ripped each of those into two 2 1/2" wide boards and then cut the ends at 45 degrees for a frame for the top. 
I attached the frame to the top using glues, 1 1/2" brads and clamps.  I applied a heavy coat of indoor/outdoor spar urethane to the entire planter inside and out.  Please note that the floor has not been installed yet.
The floor consists of seven 13" full boards and one more cut to fit.  I applied two heavy coats of indoor/outdoor urethane to these.

Here is the chamfer I made earlier.  I am hoping that this will work for drainage.
I predrilled,
and screwed the floor in.  No glue.
Here is another look at one of the chamfers. 
Once the floor was installed I put one more coat of the spar urethane on the whole thing.  It is now ready to be installed.
Now we just need to put some flowers in it.

      If the chipbreaker does not adhere to iron

      Is ......
      likely that the thin chip is stopped between the two irons with
      resulting
      plane mouth clogging. It is therefore necessary to carefully flatten the surface portion  of the chipbreaker that 
      adheres to the blade and ensure a perfect fit between the parties. The problem is that sometimes (if not frequently) the chipbreaker is not regular and after the iron screw has been
      tight the
      blade may show non contact areas, despite having flattened with
      care.  Being soft iron, we can try to straighten the chipbreaker in the vice but
      this is a little difficult job. Another method is to create a burr on the chipbreaker edge, by which we can close any (small) residual gap. The procedure
      plans to keep the chipbreaker with an angle respect to a flat surface on which we attack a sheet of 150 grit abrasive paper. Move repeatedly backwards until the metal burr forms. So
      use a small screwdriver (electrician models have
      the right thin measure) and pass it along the contact line between the two iron until they adhere perfectly.
      The process takes few minutes!

      Jointing Fence

      Squaring board edges is one of the typical job for traditional woodworking hand planes where they show their effectiveness. Stanley produced the famous but rare 386 as help  to be applied on side of jointer planes.
      Of course best  modern plane makers offer similar solutions. I recently found myself having to do the squaring job on long fir boards,  using the new Stanley 62, a low angle plane with the length of a jack which reproduces the historical N° 62. It is not a jointer but the low-angle configuration offers advantages in softwood planing. The sides are very low, not allowing the anchoring of traditional guides. That required a self-built solution. So I made a simple guide with a beech  board (composed of several pieces assembled for greater stability), reproducing in the upper portion the shape of the  plane and leaving a protrusion from the bottom of the plane of about 7 cm.
      Another removable piece, anchored to the main board, covers one of external parts to the mouth ; so,  when you join the guide to the work piece you are within the cutting area of plane. This piece could  be replaced in special situations with a shaped board in order to have a different angle than 90 degrees. The  
       anchorage system consists of two L-plates with a central pivot to create a very effective third type lever in wich the grip is guaranteed by rubber interposed between the plate and the plane.
      During processing, the main strength  is carried laterally to held the fence tightly in contact with the board. The knob is used to improve lateral handling. And here it is at work.

      This Fence Is VerySuperCool

      My Dad has Jet cabinet saw. He bought it used about 20 years ago. Its had the same Biesemeyer fence since he got it. A few years ago he had some workers at the house. They used the saw. Ever since the fence hasnt locked properly. First, hanging a 1 gallon can of polyurethane on the locking handle provided enough extra grip. Lately, my Dad has had to resort to using a Quick-Grip clamp to hold the fence in position.
      The old Biesemeyer had served well, but lost its locking ability.
      When I saw Marcs review of the VerySuperCool Table Saw Fence System I immediately thought of my Dad. The VerySuperCool Table Saw Fence System is an aftermarket fence that fits on standard Biesemeyer Fence guide rails. It also features an easily adjustable T-Square section and a fence made of extruded aluminum.I ordered the VerySuperCool Table Saw Fence for my Dad for Christmas. After a slight mix up with the order, Allan was very helpful. He went above and beyond to correct the mixup and even called me twice to ensure I’d ordered the correct Fence System (it comes in a set size for the Biesemeyer rail and in an adjustable size for alternate rails).Once the VerySuperCool Fence arrived, it proved very easy to install. It was just a matter of attaching the locking lever and fence to the T-Square section. From there I made a few quick adjustments to the set screws for alignment and we were in business.In use I found the VerySuperCool Fence to be a joy to use. It slides easily, locks tightly and is dead straight - all the qualities you want in a table saw fence.
      Not too many pieces. Even I could assemble it easily.
      These good traits are so strong, they easily outchoice the few negatives I found. The negative traits were the small gap under the fence which let ¼” plywood get stuck under it and the face of the aluminum extrusion which forms fence actually had a slight curve to each of the three (3) segments which make up the vertical face. Both of the these issues were completely remedied by adding a plywood face to the fence. The alignment marker ever has enough play to accommodate the 3/4" thickness of the plywood fence.

      That small gap was an issue when cutting thin plywood for drawer bottoms.
      It was easily addressed with a plywood face. Time dictated the clamps.
      Well counter-sink fasteners soon.
      One final thing I found about the fence, neither good nor bad in my opinion, is that there is side-to-side play in the T-nuts which attach the fence to the T-Square portion of the assembly. This is eliminated when the T-nuts are tightened and never impacted the use or performance of the fence. However, it should be noted that while the fence can be slid forward and back similarly to a Unifence, it will need to be realigned each time it’s moved forward or back.
      After I set it up I used the VerySuperCool Table Saw Fence for the entire day to cut draw bottoms, draw side dados and build a clamp rack. It performed like a champ the whole time. I did well with my selection of Dad’s Christmas present.
